I'm not so sure about your Ma Bell analogy. Ma Bell was a sluggish monopoly that had to be broken up to spur competition and innovation. Comcast is dominant but certainly not a monopoly. My local town in N. CA, for example, is served by Comcast Cable, which has significant competition from satellite. As for broadband, there is no cable modem service here, so I use a DSL connection instead.

However I agree that Comcast looks like a good defensive investment in these uncertain times. Price protection is enhanced by limited competition and most Americans do not seem to regard their cable TV and broadband internet connections as discretionary purchases.
