Bush energy plan is giveaway to big oil, Sept 11, 2001
The Bush energy plan now before Congress is a huge giveaway to big oil and big coal, and consumers and our environment will pay the price.
His plan, which was adopted by the House of Representatives, provides $33 billion in handouts to the oil companies and other polluting industries.

Instead of lowering fuel costs, increasing energy efficiency or expanding the use of renewable power, the Bush bill increases pollution, opens special places like the Arctic Refuge and other lands to oil drilling and other destructive activities and leaves consumers to pick up the tab.
The Bush energy plan makes the wrong choice in focusing on more drilling, coal burning and nuclear power. The plan will increase carbon dioxide pollution from cars, SUVs and power plants, increase the amount of nuclear waste and harm public lands that Americans treasure. Washington has sent a signal to the oil, gas and mining industries that our pristine wild lands are up for grabs.
There are quicker, cleaner, cheaper and safer energy solutions that will not only help us save money and energy but also cut down on pollution and safeguard are treasured wild lands. For example, simply making SUVs get the same gas mileage as cars would save 1 million barrels of oil a day, more than is recoverable from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, reducing our independent on foreign oil and alleviating pressures to explore for oil on our public lands.
We need a balanced energy plan base don energy efficiency, renewable energy and responsible additions to supply.
