I searched around and found the following free solution to my problem:

Most programs have a setting to show or not show the icon or to start or not start the program with windows. If that's not the case, go to RUN on the Start Menu, type Regedit,then double click through : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and delete the keys running programs you don't want.(Careful!!) Also check the other keys beggining with RUN directly underneath the first.
