And the same people who cheer for the liberation of the Iraqis - which is a fine thing, FWIW - will be completely indifferent to the billions of other souls who live under awful governments that do rotten things to them year in and year out.

The State Department's annual human rights report just came out. It makes for very interesting reading.

I have seen this standard, childish rhetorical trick hundreds of times lately; paint an opposite argument in the most extreme terms possible to belittle your debate opponent, then claim jubilant victory for being so clever.

It's childish and it's transparent. The piece you posted doesn't begin to address any point that I have made on this thread, if you had some particular reason for replying to me instead of the thread at large. I would give it a C- in academic terms for a paper on international relations.

If freeing people from tyrants is our reason for being in the world, let's go nail Mugabe to the wall in Zimbabwe, he's a psychotic scumbag who lets farmers be murdered in their homes by his gangs.

Can I expect to hear that addressed soon from Washington, and not the tired apathetic rhetoric he has received so far from Americans who don't care? Why don't we act to liberate all oppressed peoples wherever they may be? Why didn't we invade South Africa under apartheid they had human rights violations and nukes galore.

How embarrassing it will be to have to explain to those poor victims how much better off they could be if they just lived in a country we give a shit about. But it wouldn't be in the character of Washington officials to admit that.
