well now I have had more time to look at BigCharts events, I don't think they are that meaningful because it is difficult to tell exactly what bar the event is marking and whether that bar is the record date or the payout date - I have seen different stocks where it looks like different dates are being flagged.

so far, all stocks I have chosen have made their dividends after the announcement by the day before ex-div date [ie the last trading date before ex-div] - even something like PNC made it, though only for a one day bounce.

not to say I made an profit on every trade (PNC in particular trounced me), but the profit was always there to be made.
