<we can hope for a positive response from the Iranian side>

Doesn't anybody learn anything from history?

When Iraq attacked Iran, what was the effect? The mullahs solidified their hold on Iran. Nationalism, a foreign threat, trumps all else, in any nation's internal politics.

A U.S. attack on Iran, or just a continuation of the constant threats against them by Administration officials, will solidify the cleric's power in Iran, and weaken the voices of reason and compromise.

We've seen exactly the same effect in the U.S., in the last 4 weeks. Those in power can always count on a "rally round the flag" effect, in a war or threatened war. The fact that US soldiers are on every border, and dominate the waters to the south, will induce a siege mentality in Iran.
