Retired Mossad agent guilty of faking reports

A court in Israel has convicted a former officer of the Mossad secret service of fabricating intelligence reports which gave the impression that Syria was preparing for war against Israel.

The man, Yehuda Gil, was convicted after a year-long trial, of passing false information intended to harm state security.

The Israeli media has said the information may have distorted Israeli assessments of Syria's political and military intentions, and could have triggered a war. Mr Gil had given his Mossad bosses fake information that Damascus was preparing to attack Israel, claiming he had got it from a source in Syria.

He kept hundreds of thousands of dollars which Mossad had given him to pay the Syrian informant .
