Do you have the link you use for Dave Winer?

scripting.com

Why does he (Winer)think the piece will disappear behind NYT's firewall?

Dave is a weblog guru of the first rank. A software millionaire from the 80s, he spent the 90s starting a new software company, Userland, writing scripting programs and finally programs to help with weblog creation, Manilla and Radio. Paul Philp has a website based on Radio. I'm experimenting with one. Dave is on a some sort of fellowship for portions of this year and the next at Harvard Law School of which one of the intents is to see just how much weblogs can contribute to education.

Okay, now to the Times comment. One of his concerns about weblogs is that they have access to archival news information. For a variety of reasons he has used the NYTimes online archives. Recently the Times decided to put their archives behind a firewall and charge a fee for access. Dave protested. The Times changed it's policy but seemed wobbly about it to Dave. So he's now in rather extended conversations with the Times manager of the archives as to their policy. So his comment was sort of a challenge to the Times to keep their archives out in the open rather than charge for access.
