Does seem that a couple of tanks and 100 marines could have been spared to protect a collection so priceless and irreplaceable.

Maybe the people running the war didn't consider it important because they saw no direct relevance to the history of Texas.

If I recall right, Winston Churchill made the key decisions which saved Paris from being bombed into rubble during WWII. That guy at least had some sense of a cultural heritage pre-dating the founding of the Dallas Cowboys.
