Hi elmat, my fabled Chung Hom Kok Bay Beach Bum Economy CHKokBBB is in trouble.

I just came back fro two hours on the beach, to swim in the cool water, drink on the hot sand, and then eat lunch at the friendly kiosk.

I exchanged some stories with the proprietress, telling her about my CHKokBBB scheme of existence. She questioned me whether I had noticed that instead of three beach cleaning crew, since April 1st we only have one. Oops.

It seems that in a cost cutting measure, the government privatized the beach-cleaning task to a private outfit that then promptly fired two of crew. The 5 lifeguards, still a government function, will monitor the beach cleaning quality as part of its additional duties.

My observant wife informs me that the following sectors of the economy are doing better than before SARS:

(a) Dry cleaning service (increased demand for linen etc cleaning services)
(b) Chinese pharmacy
(c) Tailors (many ladies have clothing made to order against magazine photos instead of buying expensive designer labeled ready-to-wear)

I would imagine brothels may do poorly in the new SARS economy, and if so, someone needs to worry about one of the retail space of an un-named real estate partnership focusing on shops in a particular Mongkok district, Kowloon side.

Chugs, Jay
