Perhaps I was not precise enough. You are correct "cash is king", but, what I tried to point out is that fear can become a factor during deflationary times especially if the government looks like it might collapse as well. If people loose faith in major institutions than the ultimate cash can become gold. The deflation would have to be very severe and the threat of default would have to be very high for this to become an important factor in major democracies which is very unlikely. Second tier and third world countries ... who knows.
