Mbeki has been a major disappointment, from his dangerous foot-dragging on AIDS to his ineffectual role in helping Mugabe's victims in neighboring Zimbabwe. South Africa is the only country on the continent with the means and the stature to provide some leadership for the continent.

And they have done almost nothing. Mbeki should be more concerned that the US almost certainly won't descend on Africa and the carnage will continue.

If South Africa ever descends to the level of chaos found in Zimbabwe today, say goodnight to the whole continent.

(PS I spent several years in southern Africa and still have family ties there, if you need any information or perspective on events there.)
