Tough week for Democrat "front runner" (Pundit Review) As we all know by now Senator John Forbes Kerry (JFK, get it) got into some trouble while campaigning in New Hampshire last week for saying, "What we need now is not just a regime change in Saddam Hussein and Iraq, but we need a regime change in the United States." Kerry's rebuttal was to ridicule his congressional critics as being unworthy of criticizing him because they had not served. How dare they question his patriotism. Actually, that is a classic diversion. Nobody questioned his patriotism, they questioned his judgment. This week Kerry is campaigning in Iowa where he is still answering questions about "regime change". Responding to critics who said it was inappropriate for him to be criticizing the President during the war, Kerry said on April 7, "This is a democracy. We could be at war a year from now. Would we put the election on hold?" What he is essentially saying is that if you question his judgment you are somehow snuffing out democracy. Speaking of democracy, one would think Kerry would be concerned about casting a few votes for the people he represents in the Senate. In the last week alone Kerry missed five out of six votes. He recorded a DNV on President Bush's $78.7 billion supplemental budget to pay for the war and other homeland security costs. He recorded a DNV on a Seaport Security bill to authorize an additional $1B in funds. He recorded a DNV on a bill earmarking money for equipping commercial airliners with technology to repel shoulder mounted rockets. He recorded a DNV on a bill to scrap $150 million in senatorial projects not related to the war or protecting the homeland. He recorded a DNV on a bill to spend more for security in high threat cities and slightly less elsewhere. What to make of the Kerry campaign thus far? He is tied with Howard Dean in New Hampshire polls and just watched lightweight John Edwards raise more money than him in the first quarter.
