How many coal miners did you know? You needed to know people in the right group, but it was not rare in that group.

I didn't know anyone who died an an accident for want of a seatbelt back in the days before seatbelts.
How do you do? How many people did you know who were killed in auto accidents? How many headlines do you remember where someone was thrown from a car and that probably killed them?

Statistically, seatbelts do save lives. And common sense says they should.

I really loved riding in the back of my uncle's truck.
That's fine. But don't delude yourself into thinking it's as safe as being in the cabin with a seatbelt on.

Another "modern" thing is the drive against drunk driving. MADD. Do you disapprove of that too? It is more convenient to just drive home from a bar than have to call a cab.
