Vincent, you write: <<Steve, your earlier comments about not being able to deliver QoS over Gigabit Ethernet are not exactly accurate. Check out Extreme Networks. They are still private, but are delivering QoS over Gig Ethernet today.>>
My understanding is that Fibre Channel's quality of service is perfect. It can send data, video, and audio with guaranteed SYNCHRONOUS delivery. Gigibit Ethernet uses something called RSVP which is an improvement but far from the kind of quality of service provided by Fibre Channel. Also, there are problems with RSVP. There are no RSVP standards yet so it is still a proprietary technology. Also, I have read that the RSVP standards discussions are not going very well. In addition, RSVP, which involves reserving bandwidth for transmissions requiring QOS, results in an overall decline in throughput for the network. So in my opinion if you need true quality of service in the LAN, Fibre Channel is the way to go.
