Cary, you will have to read the cross posts that I pointed the end of arguments here about 10 days ago...the short answer is that too many people here are focusing on the most extremists of the militant Islamists. But the only reason why these wackos have the field is because of the failures of every other movement within the developing world. If you read the ASSIST project (funded by EC) and the McWorld vs Jihad, you will have a more comprehensive picture of the needs and issues that lead to terrorism than just the narrow (and somewhat superfacial) perspective of Arab-Israel and bin Laden types. I know this for fact that the reason the title "Great Satan" was bestowed upon USA had absolutely nothing (I repeat, nothing, nada, zilch) to do with your perception that US exerts devilish influence on Islamic law. The US exerts no such influence as illustrated by their great ally over the past 5 decades, the Saudi Arabia. Not once did US try to get the Saudis to change their Islamic laws.
