There is only one solution: this Assad is stupid.


There is another, not contradicting the first: that Assad is playing for short term domestic political gains, maybe not realizing the chances he's taking, maybe being in such a precarious position that he needs to take them anyway. He gets a lot of radical Arab political capital for standing up to us - assuming he survives. And if Saddam's experience showed anything, it showed that survival is enough - when standing up to the Great Satan, survival on any terms is victory, at least in the minds of his audience.
