Yeah, I think there's a little problem with that, Cheryl.

If we went in and "liberated" Saudi Arabia, dumped their corrupt royal family and got them all set up to elect their own leadership in the finest democratic traditions, the democratically-elected winner might well be Ossama Bin Laden. And he would do it, probably quite handily, without any hanging chads or butterfly ballots.

What do you do then?

I think we're OK though. I'm pretty sure we've got some language left over from the Cold War era that says democratic elections are desirable in the general case, but they don't count if the person who wins is considered evil by the guy with the most guns. In that case you go in and replace him with a fascist dictator who builds a lot of statues of himself.
