There was sniper / pockets of resistance activity everywhere in the city while the looters HAD their days. The military was very focused on recovering POWs within the city. There was a lot going on.

Are we suppose to tell a soldier to pay more attention to a bunch of shoplifters when, without 100% vigilance, he could take a well-placed bullet in the neck? Guard a museum when there is a possibility of finding a fellow GI alive (POW)?

The city was not secure when these A$$holes were carrying away most of these treasured pieces.

Actually, it is sad that the world may not recover a lot of these objects.

Mothers and Fathers will never recover the life of their sons. Ask the families of the soldiers where they believe their son's / daughter's vigilance should have been focused.

You and I were not there...this time. I was there last time. I know where my attention would have been.
