Applied, Hitachi chase KLA-Tencor in metrology market

SAN JOSE -- KLA-Tencor Inc. dominated the combined inspection and metrology markets in 2002, while Japan's Hitachi Ltd. surpassed Applied Materials Inc. for second place in terms of worldwide sales last year, according to new figures from Dataquest Inc.

U.S.-based KLA-Tencor watched its combined inspection/metrology market share drop to 49.7 percent in 2002, down from 53.6 percent in 2001, according to Dataquest. In total, KLA-Tencor's sales in the sector fell from $1.9 billion in 2001, to $1.2 billion in 2002, according to the San Jose-based firm.

In total, the worldwide inspection/metrology market fell from $3.45 billion in 2001, to $2.43 billion in 2002, according to Dataquest.

Hitachi surpassed Applied for second place, as its market share jumped from 8.9 percent in 2001, to 10.8 percent in 2002. Hitachi's inspection and metrology sales went from $305.7 million in 2001, to $264 million in 2002, the report said.

Applied fell to third with 10.8 percent share in 2002, which was flat from 2001. Its combined inspection and metrology sales were $264 million in 2002, compared to $305.7 million in 2001.

FEI Co. remained in 4th place, but its share dropped from 4.4 percent in 2001, to 4.2 percent in 2002. Its combined inspection and metrology sales were $101.4 million in 2002, compared to $152 million in 2001.

Rounding out the 2002 rankings in order were ADE (2.6 percent), Leica (2.1 percent), and Rudolph (2 percent).Veeco (1.4 percent) and Nanometrics (1.4 percent) were tied, while Therma Wave had 1 percent.

In 2001, Therma Wave had 3.1 percent, Rudolph had 2.1 percent, Veeco had 1.7 percent, Leica had 1.6 percent, Nanometrics had 1.4 percent, and ADE had 1.3 percent.
