This is a war,
You begin with the wrong premise. A war implies a threat, this is no war, this is a mugging in which we are both observers and accessories before the fact. This attack is just barely above murder for sport. I feel sorry for the troops who in good faith were ordered to carry out these actions. It will dawn on them in time that each death or act of destruction was unnecessary and they will feel bad.

That being said, when you participate in a mugging you should at least try to learn what is going on.
