The artifacts which were looted are thousands of years old, and have been passed from hand to hand countless times.

They can't be sold to a legitimate collector without provenance. But there are always rich people on the fringes willing to buy. Even more so today than ever before.

So they aren't seen again for a lifetime or two. What does that mean to an artifact 5,000 years old? These artifacts will outlast you and me and everybody we know and retain their beauty.

The fear is that the thieves are amateurs and will panic and destroy the artifacts to keep from being found out.

This does happen unfortunately.
