I happened to be reading an article on GPS vs. Galileo today, and came across an offhand reference to (essentially) Europe's having eaten America's lunch in wireless by getting its act together sooner and in a more coordinated way. (The implication was that unless we take some major steps to upgrade GPS now, the same thing could happen again.) The authors of the piece were bigshot scientists--world-class types, the kind who help invent nuclear weapons and that kind of thing. They also happen to be people I know. So I called one up and said, "do you really think that GSM has won the game? isn't it too soon to tell, what with CDMA's technical advantages, etc. etc.?" Amused (perhaps because of the known technical illiteracy of the questioner), the guy responded, "that's an interesting question. If you asked 10 random experts, perhaps 7 or 8 would agree with us. 2 or 3 would agree with you. We'll see who's right."
