Ð President Mohammad Khatami of Iran reiterated the Islamic worldÕs strong objection to the US-British war on Iraq, condemning crimes perpetrated by the invading troops against the Iraqi people.

In a Saturday meeting with the inhabitants of the Iranian ÒKhashiÓ and ÒSerwanÓ towns, Khatami said only the people of Iraq have the right to exercise self-determination, to form their own government and to determine the future of their country, calling upon the international community to back the Iraqis in order to overcome their ordeal.

The Iranian President called upon the Islamic world to stand firm against the scheming of foes and colonialists and to unite ranks for confronting all plans targeting the entire world.

Meanwhile, the chief of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee at IranÕs Shoura Council Mohsen Merdamadi also stressed the Iraqi peopleÕs right to self-determination and to decide their destiny.

During a meeting with BritainÕs Ambassador in Tehran Richard Daltoun, Merdamadi said appointing a foreign person to rule Iraq is a violation of the international law and an insult to the Iraqis, making clear that serving the interests of Iraq and their people should be made under the supervision of the UN and states neighbouring Iraq.

Daltoun also stressed the role of the UN and the Iraqis in maintaining the right to their self-determination.
