Botswana was my first diplomatic assignment in 1988; a success story in many ways, it has been ravaged by AIDS since then. I haven't been back since then or followed it closely. I hope the country makes it through the crisis. Zambia used to be a basket case while Zim was the star. The roles are reversed now - residents in Vic Falls now go into Zambia to shop for essentials instead of the other way around. Zambia is certainly doing better than they did under Kaunda. Most African countries benefit from dumping their president-for-life guys and the one-party states.
