<The authors of the piece were bigshot scientists--world-class types>

Tekuboi-san, big-shot scientists don't play dice with the universe, nor do they conduct votes to decide the veracity of a scientific principle.

Your big-shot scientist is obviously a random mutant on a losing [loosing in American] roll of the dice.

PS: John, is right that the handset buyers have been voting with the big-shot. But that is all past. What they do over the next decade is what will matter. Profits are not made from the past, they are made in the future. Predicting and creating the future is the business of investors.
