CBOT gives ultimatum

Tribune staff, wire reports
Published April 15, 2003

The Chicago Board of Trade threatened to sever ties with its sole provider of clearing services unless the company accepts a buyout or agrees to an exclusive contract, said two customers who attended a meeting with the board's president, Bernard Dan. Dan told more than 80 members of the Board of Trade Clearing Corp. that the exchange may stop using the service and has begun searching for alternatives, the sources said. The exchange offered about two weeks ago to buy Clearing Corp. for $207 million. Dan wants to prevent the company from handling trades from Eurex AG, which plans to open a U.S. futures market next year. Maria Gemskie, a spokeswoman for the Board of Trade, declined to comment. Officials at the clearing company weren't available to comment.
