During the war, U.S. forces sought to destroy foreign "terrorist" training centers the Pentagon said was operating inside Iraq, such as the complex at Salman Pak, southeast of Baghdad, raided by U.S. Marines on April 5.

American military officials said the foreign fighters, thought to be well armed, included men from Syria, Egypt, Sudan and other countries. They said foreign fighters were present in some of the early ground engagements in the war after U.S. and British forces punched into Iraq from Kuwait, and that those fighters suffered severe losses in those battles......
