South Korean cellco KTF is tomorrow set to be the first operator to take possession of a shipment of 1xRTT chipsets developed by Samsung. Last year the South Korean consumer electronics company said it had developed its own 1x chipset for use in domestic devices.

The chips are likely to offer fewer features than the Qualcomm versions and as such, are likely to be used only in low-end terminals by more price-sensitive subscribers. While a limited run of terminals featuring Samsung's 1x chipset is not perceived as a big threat to Qualcomm, it should offer Samsung greater leverage when it comes to future chipset pricing. China Unicom, for example, recently announced that its parent company had signed an agreement to purchase 700,000 1x handsets from Samsung For its part, Qualcomm remains bullish regarding the shipment of its MSM chipset series -; covering both CDMA and 1x technologies. The vendor expects to ship more than 20 million MSM phone chips in 4Q-FY02 (ending Sept. 30), of which about 15 million are expected to be 1x chips. The company attributes its confidence to strong order input from its customers, with particular strength in demand for chips destined for the growing Chinese market.

Analysts believe that overall demand from the Chinese market will help Qualcomm achieve its numbers. In other markets, however, analysts at UBS Warburg find the going a little more difficult for Qualcomm. They find it hard to see material upside in the U.S. market in the near-term, given that 50%+ of the installed base in the U.S. is already upgrading every year.

Other threats to Qualcomm's position include the fact that a number of other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are currently working with several companies to develop alternative 1x solutions. <<
