France had already been conquered by Germans, previous to our liberating it. Liberation becomes a bit more problematic, especially in terms of international law, when you liberate a people from their own indigenous government. They have every right to liberate themselves from their government, but it's a hairy mess to set precedents for outsiders to do it, imo. In this case it might work out to the good, but that is far from certain, and the precedents set were so bad, imo, they do not justify our actions.
