POET was the proposal by Adtran for HDSL-2, the single-pair implementation of HDSL in competition with the consortium led by Level One and ADC plus independent efforts by Metallink and Orckit (and perhaps others). Apparently it has a fatal architectural flaw (according to Level One, anyway) which dooms any chances of POET becoming the de facto market standard and may make them so late to market with a system which is compatible with whatever standard emerges that they become a small player in that business.
