True, in the short run there is a negative impact of letting the company go under. But in the short run there is a perhaps smaller but at least partially offsetting advantage to not subsidizing the company and a much bigger advantage with getting rid of most subsidies in the long run.

Exactly how long it takes for the short run to become the long run in this case is a complex issue. The pain of the company going under is one large visible pain. The pain of cost of subsidizing it is spread out over many people and over a long time period so its much harder to quantify and politicians often don't bother to notice it. If you cause 10,000 people to lose 50k a year they might not vote for you and 10,000 more might not vote for you because they think you are mean. If you cause 200,000,000 people to lose $20 a year the cost is much higher but few get upset about it.
