Exactly. Not that Iraq could ever be a rival to the US.

My humble opinion is that the invasion of Iraq served the following ends:
(1) Show the world that the US ready to attack, with no need to a real threat, evidence, or even a rational argument.
(2) Secure the oil, the deepest dependency infrastructure of the planet
(3) Make billions for own affiliated companies or supporters at home
(4) Divert attention from the above by rallying Americans behind the flag and hence the Administration

Now, whether or not the invasion of Iraq helped at all in the war against terrorism is debatable. I feel the aggregate effect of the removal of Saddam and increased anti-Americanism tilts to a negative balance. But that is the beauty of putting the country in a wartime mentality - nobody cares.
