BINGO! That is precisely it. You have summed it up exactly right.
I was about to respond myself that it is entirely about Iraq failing to disarm as the UN-backed cease fire resolution from 1991 had required. They were given chance after chance to comply. WMD's are in fact a side issue, sort of a "failure to disarm" complaint on steroids, so to speak. But the basis for this campaign back into Iraq, was to force compliance to the original cease fire from 1991. Iraq invaded Kuwait, we (the coalition) punished that hostility, and accepted a cease fire resolution to end it. And yes, it was in our national interest to act, as well as for the world's interest. We need not make any apologies for that. Iraq ignored the cease fire conclusion, so we (again, the coalition) enforced it. Period, it's as simple as that.
During the 90's, we had a president that really could care less about the middle east. He had other things of personal interest going on... The time finally came that we were obligated to take action. Sept. 11, 2001 reminded us that there is still unfinished business. Thank God we had a president that understands leadership principles.
