I live in a country that has frequent and vigorously contested elections, and is almost always referred to as a democracy. The press is pretty free. The constitution ain't a bad one. The structures of democracy are all there.

Is it a democracy? Well... hard to say. The wealthy are still virtually exempt from the law. The political scene is completely controlled by shifting alliances of elite families, acting solely in their own interests and controlling a largely unsophisticated electorate with PR and the pork barrel.

Democracy? Hard to say. Tough to define.

PLEASE do not try to depict India as a Hindu Vs Muslim scenario - it JUST AINT TRUE.

All of India, no. Some of India... well, was it a year ago or so that they were firebombing trains and torching mosques in Gujarat. Is that wrong? I recall reading comments to the effect that that every Indian muslim is a potential Pakistani agent, etc. This sort of thing generally indicates that there's a bit of division somewhere in the works. If over 100 people were killed in two days of mob violence between two religious groups in the US, I think people might be referring to it as a serious problem.

It would be very reassuring if you could convince me that all this is really distorted, and that everything's really fine.
