I'm not sure how you responded to his post, Mark. He was saying that those who call opponents to the war anti-American traitors and anti-American for expressing their opinions are in themselves acting in an anti-American way. Which I think you'd agree with.

Perhaps a better response would have been to say that most of the accusations of that sort were intended to decry the lack of support for the country's actions/troops/President, rather than the mere expression of the ideas. In other words, those who flung the phrase 'traitor' mostly did so because they felt anyone who didn't support the war once it was declared were, ipso facto, acting against the good of the country, its troops and its leader.

That's a substantive issue for debate (ie. are citizens who disagree with and peacefully protest decisions of their leaders not merely helping to shape and direct public policy, as they should in a democratic society?)

Free speech of the sort both of you speak of is sanctioned and supported, within the bounds of reason (no hate crimes on either end of the spectrum, for example). It's only closed-minded individuals who attempt to suppress the expression of reasonable ideas.
