there's your post-facto. you don't know it's an extreme until after the fact.

from your brief description it sounds like price action plays an important part in your analysis. my point, which i guess wasn't too clear, is that $vix/$vxn can confirm a price action trend, but doing it the other way 'round is dangerous. your concept of tracking divergence rather than level is also one that i find very very powerful.

i think we're pretty much in agreement, other than maybe i don't see $vix/$vxn as being anywhere near an extreme low.
