When I was about 13 or 14, I lived in Lake Tahoe right by an area called the Tahoe Keys. They are a bunch of canals that were dug in a marsh so that people could put up houses and have docks for their boats. Their was on back canal that we called the "Lagoon". It was bordered by a wooded area and was our recreation place. We would take sleeping bags down there in the summer and go camping, and in the winter we would clear areas so that we could ice skate or race our motocross bicycles on the ice. In the spring the ice would get soft, but usually we could tell if the ice was still good. A bunch of us crossed the ice to visit a friend and then when we were crossing back, I led the way. I got out two steps and fell right through. I had on big ole boots and a big ole down jacket. I tried to climb back up out of the ice, got two elbows and a knee up and fell through again. I did that a few more times and was ready to give up. My core was frozen, I was tired and I was resigned to my fate. And in the background, I could hear my brother laughing. Of course, I wasn't amused that my brother found my impending death to be humorous. He finally yelled to me "TURNAROUND!"....so I did. I was only about 10 ft from the shore and fell in about three feet from the shore. I swam back to the edge and was so tired that I let my feet drop...I was only in about four and a half feet of water and could put my feet down and climb right out. Had it been a year earlier, it would have been about 10 feet of water, but we were in the middle of a severe drought and so one of my most terrifying events was a bit anticlimactic.

For those who have heard the marsh fire story, this is exactly where it happened.
