George Bush and Al Gore. One a son of a President and the other of a Senator. I think Indira was more gutsy than either of them.

Neither of whom inherited the job. If you'll notice, the other party was in power for eight years between the Bushes. Al Gore hasn't made it yet. I don't recall a non-Congress PM in India for a loooong period of time.

And for a step the few dictators take, She agreed to have elections in 1977. Lost badly. Sat in the opposition for three years and stormed to a big victory in 1980 elections.

Yes, you have to give her that. Being willing to give up power peacefully is the acid test.
