Exactly, I would never call dissenters of the right un-American, I would debate them. Problem is, they always start name-calling as soon as you start questioning them.
They have learned this tactic from right-wing talk radio where media leaders of the right liberally call anyone opposing Bush everything from "evil" to "traitor", without stopping to think that those words really mean. The "evil doers" in this case include the Methodist Church (Bush's own), Catholic Church, Vets against Bush, war heros like Kerry, Grey Davis and Max Cleland, Jesse Ventura, Libertarians, Greens, just about everyone in show biz or the arts, the NY Times, LA Times, PBS, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, McCain, European allies, moderates and liberals of all stripes.
Frankly, if all these people are "evil traitors", then I'm proud to be on their side and can see things have clearly gotten flipped around in this country. And they need re-balancing.
Among the heros of the right are Enron, Ollie North, right-wing chickenhawk draft-dodgers, deserters, greedy evangelicals, vets who think we should have stayed in Nam, hate-spewers like Hoffman and Coulter, propaganda artists like Hannity and Limbaugh, secret money men behind the Clinton character assassination, those behind Iran-Contra, BCCI Bank, the phony energy crisis, polluters, pesticide salesmen, closet racists, overt sexists, champions of homophoia, lobbyists, right-wing militias, disinformation specialists, various spooks and of course Fox News.
It's important in 2004 for Americans to make up their minds who best represents truth, honesty, integrity and the road back to global peace and prosperity, which after all, is what everyone should want more than anything. My belief is by finding a middle ground and cutting back on right-wing control of the government and media, we can right this good ship USA and once again lead in a positive, proactive way in the world. |
