Steve

Your story with your father is to say the least touching. I am happy for you that you finally were able to be friends.

Here is my list of scary moments:

1. Seeing the Pentagon hit on TV---about 20 minutes from where I live------within seconds my daughter 5-20 minutes minutes from the pentagon called to ask if I was okay just as I had my hand on the phone to call her. It was scarey feeling like you wanted to run but knowing it would do no good to run.

2. At least 4 near death experiences. I did not understand what was happening at the time-----finally read Embraced By The Light and did some research and recognized that this is what happened. Near death as a child after a tonsilectomy--a longer story here/two car accidents/and a complete near death experience after major surgery(tunnel, light, leaving the earth and returning, words received----this is one that if I really wrote about it people would be disbelieving. The doctor and I discussed immediately and a year later and he was not disbelieving.)

Accident---traveling along a major interstate---I top a hill and a trailer with cars draping off of the sides and back pulls in front of my car. In an instant, using my mathematics, I knew I would be killed if I continued going straight----as the car would hit the trailer head on.

I intentionally swerved to the shoulder on the left----then total blackness like going through a tunnel with the loudest roar I have ever heard. Suddenly the blackness ends the sound stops and I am aware that my car is headed toward a bridge ------I figured I would not survive and end up over the bridge dead. As I recognized I might die the fear disipated.

Then the steering wheel started free wheeling so fast that I could not control the wheel---so I removed my hands and relaxed into my seat. The car hit the bridge did almost a complete circle and ended up on the passengers side on the shoulder.

The engine stopped----I looked around noticed no visible damage to my self nor did I see a truck. Then someone stopped and told me they had called the state trooper. The trooper came with the driver of the truck-----interviewed us both----ask me if I was okay did I want to go to the hospital---I foolishly said no.

He told me to start my car ----it worked-----I drove another 10 minutes to a conference, gave a speech and drove back to Washington the next day for a major event----and my car was declared total by the insurance co. (Of course in shock.)

Learned later from the police that the driver of the truck had been in another accident in Penns. before he and I connected in Virginia.

A year later the flashbacks started. To this day I do not know exactly what happened between the blackness and the car free-wheeling. Just know I survived.

One of the ironies with this accident was that I was supposed to have a co-worker go with me that day. The co-worker canceled at the last minute due to not feeling well.

Over the next 6 months, we would work together on the project on which I gave the speech. As soon as the project ended, my coworker and friend went to hospital and died soon after of cancer that was hidden purposefully from me through out the project.

2. NEAR THE WATER: Not so scary and has a twist of humor in it--- at least near the water-----we were in a car rally in Hawaii/Oahu-----the rally took us around Kaena Point the Northern most point that haeole's don't take----only the locals. Being young and untimidated we followed the rally instructions-----suddenly our little Green Saab got stuck on the rough lava. I had visions of the car being stuck forever and becoming a rusted hulk. Were we ever lucky-----two strong locals walked up from the water's edge and picked the car up and moved it to another point on the lava and we continued on our way---completing the rally.

4. PHONE CALL EMERGENCY: It was scarey to receive a phone call telling me that my daughter was in the emergency room-----even before I picked up the phone, I knew. Rushing to the hospital at the medical school-----I walked into the ICU and saw her grey color(Even more scarey)----her blood count was non existent---she was in icu for 4 days with an unknown diagnosis. This was in the early 90's-----she was given a room with a view of the campus----blood that was washed and rewashed---and was sent home in 3 weeks to her apartment with her friends and went on to graduate. She now works with families and homeless.

6. SNOW: Driving along Route 64 with no sign of snow----suddently the blinding snow comes in full blast------no visibility----can't see the road or the mountain to the right. My friend rolls down the passenger window to tell me if we are near the mountain----no help. Suddenly a tractor trailer passes----one that I did not know was there as I was blinded out the back window also. I zeroed in on his tail lights using his truck as a guide. Without the truck----we would have been in touch with that mountain as happened to some that night .

So I have a copy of a book "Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway".
