As you say, the transAtlantic link from Africa slows things down considerably.

Which is not very different from my 400 msec to Seattle. I have to mention that the usual ping time is 800-1000 msec --- and that's when I'm lucky.

Also very interesting to see how fast the speeds are within the US. Actually, in desperation, I use two ISPs because sometimes the bandwidth from either is so bad that being on the net is a total waste of time. So when one is impossible I use the other. Sometimes, I can spend 5-10 minutes to download a single page but usually it's much quicker than that.
