DEM DEAN IN POSTWAR PREZ-POLL SLIP

April 19, 2003 -- Anti-war Democratic 2004 presidential wannabe Howard Dean has lost some momentum in the key early state of New Hampshire now that the Iraq war is over and widely seen as a success, a new poll suggests.

Last month, Dean was tied for first with Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) but now there's a very slim lead for Kerry - who voted for the war but sharply criticized President Bush over it - in the American Research Group poll, done Tuesday through Thursday.

Kerry had 24 percent, ex-Vermont Gov. Dean 19, Rep. Dick Gephardt (D-Mo.) 15, Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) 13 and nobody else above 2 percent. A month ago, Kerry had 23 percent and Dean 22.

Pollster Richard Bennett said the survey shows Dean "has lost some of his pre-war momentum" but Dean's staff disputed that, noting that Dean's 3-point slide is within the poll's 4-point error margin.

"There's nothing in these numbers to suggest any real change. It's a margin-of-error thing," said Dean campaign manager Joe Trippi.

The poll shows no gain of support for candidates Gephardt, Lieberman and Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.), who strongly backed the war.

The least popular of all Democratic candidates was Rev. Al Sharpton. The survey found practically zero support for him - with 48 percent of likely Democratic primary voters having a negative view of him and only 10 percent having a favorable impression.
