Raymond,

It is not beyond the realm of possibility that the US could establish military bases in Iraq.

We have military bases in Britain, Germany, Kuwait, South Korea and a dozen or so other places. I doubt very much you will find anybody in those countries who believe the US have ever used, or will use, those bases to subjugate their country.

For some period of time some military presence in Iraq by the US would seem a prudent idea. Obviously, Iraq doesn't have much of a military anymore. It will take time to establish a credible one.

There may still pro-Baathist forces (military or political) within Iraq that could attempt to undermine the new Iraqi government.

It is plausible that some of Iraq's neighbors may have agendas of their own.

At this point, I believe the best chance for Iraqi unity and freedom is to create a democracy where the many diverse ethnic groups can participate in decisions that relate to their own future. Democracy may or may not be successful in Iraq, but I would at least like to see it get a fair chance.

Incidentally, I wouldn't be surprised to see peace keeping troops from other countries arrive in Iraq soon. I believe that process is already underway.
