I am just pointing out that scientists don't sit down usually and think "how can we create a scare to generate research funding". Rather all these little people following there interests create the conspiracy. The reason NSF wants people to show "relevance to society" is because some some anti-intellectuals somewhere want them to look "cost-effective" with the tax payers dollars :)
