Islamist terrorists don't only want to hurt the US

The events of 9/11 stand it stark contrast to this line of thinking. We really don't know what's in the heart and mind of every Islamic terrorist. However, we can make certain assumptions. One assumptions is that fear of the U.S. using it's raw power will disswade them from acting.

If Osama Bin Laden truly believed we would hunt him down in every cave complex he built in Afghanistan, I doubt he would have acted so brazenly and killed so many innocent Americans. What he saw from the previous administration were words, vacilation, and empty rhetoric. The exact opposite from the response President Bush has provided.

Reacting strongly toward terrorist attacks has beneficial side effects. Fanatical muslims may dance on the street claiming their hatred for America. But, they may now respect us enough not to act on those words of hatred.

This point of view has been missing from your analysis of "are we safer from terrorists now" line of thinking.
