Now you come to the problem of education and awareness - Americans don't learn other languages and expose themselves to other cultures. They have little or no idea how societies and religions other than their own function.

Despite all the media and Internet access, America remains a sharply isolated society geographically where few people study or work abroad and build international ties that will give them a realistic perspective on foreign policy issues.

So they are easy marks for the manipulators. Religious zealotry like the Franklin Graham stuff I have seen in the news just compounds the problem. Put it all together with a mix of fear (of terrorism) and national pride (at our military success) and hating the Other not only becomes fashionable, it's pretty much obligatory for "Joe Suburb", the average voter in his SUV in the suburban wasteland.
