I'm not proposing that we do away with oil altogether. But, we can certainly make our economy much more energy efficient then it is today, use a whole lot less oil and still heat our homes properly. As far as the people in the ME are concerned. They'll just have to find other ways to get by. We're not running a welfare program for them by buying their oil. We'd still be buying their oil after all. Just not so much as before.
