The 'lefties' haven't had much effect on the nuclear power industry.

It's Capitalists and Bankers who are the reason no new nuclear power plants have been built in the US since the 'seventies.

Even with massive government subsidies (the US nuclear power industry has received large taxpayer-paid subsidies for 50 years) the industry is less than economic.

The Cost of fuel production (mining and vast amounts of electricity to enrich the fuel) is subsidized.

Insurance costs against catastrophe are subsidized by the taxpayers (Price Anderson Act... up for renewal in the new energy bill).

Long-term (1/2 million years, or there-abouts) storage/disposal of spent fuel is paid for by the taxpayers... but the greatest expense of all - disposing of the highly radioactive containment structures themselves (yet to be done even once) after they are shut-down at the end of their useful life (around 30 years), although by law it is supposed to be paid for by the utilities owning the generating facilities themselves, has not been adequately budgeted for by those same utilities... as the long-term storage cost is likely to exceed all the profits they made during the productive life of the plants.

This - largest yet - cost will be passed to the taxpayers, too.

Nope, one couldn't build and operate a nuclear power plant (at least, as they are presently designed) in the Free Market... it would be cost prohibitive... a money loser.

The entire industry only exists because of MASSIVE, and ONGOING government subsidies.
