Not to defend any cover-up, but it is important to note just how hard it was to initially realize that there was a brand new disease in town. The initial symptoms, and even many of the terminal symptoms, are very similar indeed to existing diseases (like RSV infection).

Also take a look at how first-world Canadian hospitals mishandled their early cases, despite an earlier warning by the WHO.
